The Department of Special Collections preserves the cultural heritage of the University of Amsterdam and makes it accessible for education and research. The collections comprise a wide diversity of valuable and remarkable books and documents in print and writing, dating from ancient times to the present day, and originating from all corners of the world. These sources cover nearly all fields of science, art and society; they document our history and reflect daily life of people in the past.
The database Books and Manuscripts in the Special Collections will allow everyone at their own home to search and find, to see and study these documents. The database contains a varied and rapidly growing choice from a number of frequently consulted collections. At this moment this choice comprises some fifty medieval manuscripts, a few important books from the Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana, the diaries of Willem de Clercq and works in manuscript, typescript and print from renowned authors like Multatuli, Frederik van Eeden and Albert Verwey.
